Mental Muse: The Mental Health Advocacy Meme for Authors invites writers who experience mental health issues to share their answers five simple questions.
WHY on earth would I want to do that?
Fear of stigma leads to isolation, when one quarter of the Globe WILL at some point suffer from a mental illness (and that’s rising). That’s an enormous amount of people silently suffering for fear of stigmatisation, an alarming amount of whom will commit suicide. It’s an illness which worsens with silence/shame/fear/confusion.
Professionals with mental health issues who have found a way to lead productive lives, and stand up to be counted, would offer an incredible source of hope to the very many others who see no way of achieving anything like a normal life, let alone success.
I’ve always been open about my bipolar disorder, preferring that to lies and excuses and bowing down to the ignorant, yet I still earn money from my writing.
Remaining silent says to the world, ‘I’m as ashamed of who I am as you are.’
I kept the questions simple, allowing you to be as open or not as you wish. You might thoroughly explore each question or simply declare ‘I write and I have [insert your diagnosis/complaint]’ proudly. Sometimes, dipping a toe in the water is all that’s required to show willing. But if even that’s too daunting, simply stop by, comment and share the words of the brave and the bold with your community, and learn from those who are paddling down the same stream as your good selves. 🙂
Great, I’m all in. How do I get started?
