Most of you will be starting your NANO projects so I’m keeping this short so you can get back to that daily word count! Go, go, go!
My insecurity this month is regarding university projects. For the Fiction Module which I’m currently studying we have to read several novels and short stories in anthologies while writing an authors statement essay (approx 1500 words) and a short story or novel extract of 10k. I started this months ago although it was the bare bones of a short heading at around 2k, now it’s 14k! A lot’s changed thanks to brilliant betas advice and I’m ‘getting there’ with that. But my gosh, I hate author statements. I can’t do the referencing. It’s like a nightmare I can’t face, like maths or science. And the statement requires me to state how the story came about and all the decisions I made and for what reason and which book (from the syllabus) informed those decisions? Blah, Blah!
What if it’s a purely organic experience? What if the characters whispered ideas to me in dreams? What if I cannot pin down my reasoning for each decision? The thing is, I could have answered why I chose my character and her fear for the bare bones edition, but layers come from instinct, from emotion, from character for me. I know there are lots of rigid plotters out there – those who stick to your plans like glue – but what about the rest of you….
… could you answer these questions for your WIPs?
