September 6 Question: Have you ever surprised yourself with your writing? For example, by trying a new genre you didn’t think you’d be comfortable in?
Yes. The first time I had to ghostwrite a story it was erotic romance. Not great as I dislike reading strict romance let alone erotica (up to that point I had only read one book for review years before. I had never even wrote a mild sex scene; the idea made me cringe! If I hadn’t needed the cash, I’d have turned the offer down flat. But hey, $500 to write a 20k words pre-plotted story was too good to turn down. So, after tons of research and cringe-ridden reading, I wrote the story, crossed my fingers and much to my surprise the client loved it.
This offer opened up the ghostwriting option for me. I have since written around 20 erotic novellas for clients (although not for a while) and although it’s never going to be an ‘enjoyable’ genre for me to write or read, the challenge has taught me lots about using different literary techniques, and that it’s good to break out of my comfort zone.
