Ela Lourenco is currently touring the internet is support of her debut novel Essence. Essence is a book that explores the fantasy realm but contains elements of the paranormal with a little bit of romance thrown in for good measure. With a book that contains more than a few genres, Ela takes a moment to discuss genre confusion with us…

This topic has baffled many readers and authors over the years. When you go into a bookshop (yep, they still exist for all of you e-book fans out there!) or search on a site such as Amazon there are always separate sections for different genres. As an author and avid reader myself I can be found on Amazon regularly browsing my favourite sections for new books I may have missed thus far. And, I know first-hand how confusing it can be when you know you’re in the mood for a particular type of book and just can’t seem to find one that fits the bill.
Now, I love books, always have, always will. I have devoured books since I can remember. Reading is no less essential to my life than oxygen – as is writing and the art of spinning a story out of nothing. I enjoy books of all genres, from Tolstoy to horror (although some might argue that Tolstoy could be classed as horror in some ways) but there is nothing I enjoy more than a good fantasy, paranormal or science fiction novel. But oftentimes, those genres are comingled and it’s tricky to find one that fits the bill. Well, this is the tricky part. How many times have I searched for a book under ‘Fantasy’ and come up with something else altogether (yes, that kind of book). Sometimes a book you think is paranormal has been unceremoniously labelled science fiction and vice versa… or even worse, if there is any element of a relationship in the story at all (which let’s be honest most books will) then you might find that said novel is logged under romance.
Now, there is nothing wrong with romance as a genre, I enjoy romance in books as much as the next girl and it can be a great tool to create tension and add flavour to a story. But a story about a gutsy kick-ass heroine, such as Katra in my first novel ‘Essence’, who’s fate it is to battle the darkness descending on the world would probably not satisfy a die-hard romance novel fan as the relationship my heroine has with the aptly named Blade is merely a thread in the web of the story, not the story itself. ‘Essence’ is in essence (pardon the pun) a fantastical story with supernatural, paranormal and science fiction elements (with a sprinkling of romance) – so which shelf does this book belong to?
I spend hours online reading excerpts from books to check that they are what I’m after, and I know I’m not alone in this rather time-consuming hobby! And when I’m asked how I would classify my own writing I can never give a simple answer – there is no one word for what I write, and this applies to most authors in my opinion. I have had numerous lively debates on this topic with a variety of other authors and readers throughout the years. It seems that there is no one right answer, and, despite the ever-growing list of ‘sub-genres’ our confusion is growing as many novels are ‘cross-genre’ as I like to call it. My book ‘Essence’ definitely falls into this category – there is a tough as nails heroine, magic galore, prophecies, fighting, betrayal, other worlds… it’s paranormal/fantasy/science fiction and romance all rolled into one. And, for all of you, who like me, enjoy being exposed to more than one genre at a time – it is a true cross-genre creation.
Katra is a Fae Hunter in a world once ravaged by a terrible war. Having lost all memory of her childhood and rightful identity, her duty is now to protect the tentative peace brokered by the varying races of the supernatural world. When an evil darkness begins to spread, draining young witches of their power, Katra must find a way back to her true past in order to save the future.
Enduring many trials as ever-increasing powers awaken within her, Katra must also struggle with the mixed emotions her new partner, Blade – a Black Dragon – is rousing within her. Together they must battle the shadows that plan to devour the world they know and prevent its decent into another thousand-year war.
Can Katra hold onto her strength as the truth of her very being begins to unravel? Can she bear the weight that ancient prophecy has placed on her young shoulders? Or is her destiny to regain her true self, only to lose the world she is sworn to protect?
